Iñigo Lekue Suffers Muscle Injury At The End Of Training
Since starting the preseason last Thursday, things have been going well for Athletic. The team has trained hard, enjoyed a few morning conditioning sessions, and even held team breakfasts and dinners on some occasions. Gaizka Garitano’s squad is busy preparing for what will be a vitally important season but even training can bring bad news in the form of injuries.
At the end of Tuesday’s morning session Iñigo Lekue suffered an unknown injury. While half the team had already left the field, the 26-year-old wanted to work more on crossing and after sending one ball into the ball he immediately went down to the ground. Some teammates and trainers quickly surrounded him and eventually Lekue was able to make his way to the benches with Dr. Paco Angulo.
While sitting, Lekue covered his face with a towel and was in obvious pain. He would soon leave the field with the help of Dr. Angulo and at the time there was fear of a serious injury. Several hours after training the club announced that Lekue had suffered an injury to the rectus femoris muscle of his right leg. More tests will be carried out and at this time there is no word on how long Lekue is expected to be sidelined, though it appears he has avoided a more serious issue.
After missing the bulk of last season with a fractured ankle and lower back surgery, Lekue is hoping to enjoy football again this year. His versatility could make him an important weapon for Garitano, but the Lezama product will have to have a strong preseason to prove that he deserves a place in the team. Athletic’s first summer friendly is just days away against Arenas on 20 July.
