Athletic Complete Third Day Of Preseason Training Before Enjoying A Day Off
Preseason officially kicked off for Athletic on Thursday as the players reported to Lezama for the first session of the summer. The following day the team underwent physical training in the morning before enjoying another regular session outside in the evening. On Saturday, Gaizka Garitano put the squad through an hour and a half focused on ball work and balance.
At the beginning of the session, the players all spent time working with a balance ball where they had to stand on one foot while controlling passes with their legs, chest, and head. This exercise also helps to strengthen ankles. Physical trainer Juan Iribarren led this portion before the squad eventually split up into two groups. Garitano took half and Assistant Coach Patxi Ferreira took the others with both working on rondos and playing small field matches with four goals and no goalkeepers.
While the rest of the team worked together, the goalkeepers went to Field 5 with coach Aitor Iru to work individually. Club legend José Ángel Iribar was in attendance as was Technical Director Andoni Ayarza. The team will now have the day off on Sunday to rest and will be back at Lezama Monday morning for closed conditioning. Monday evening the players will be back on the field for a training session that will be open to the public.
