Athletic Will Kick Off The 2019/2020 La Liga Season By Hosting Barcelona At San Mamés

Athletic have their sights set on European qualification this season (AC)

It may seem as though the La Liga season just ended, but preseason training is already underway. The Athletic players reported to Lezama as early as Tuesday of this week to undergo medicals examinations before the entire team took the field at Lezama on Thursday for the first session of the summer. Before training even began, La Liga had already released the full schedule for the 2019/2020 season.

Athletic now have a target in mind as they will open the season at San Mamés with a match against Barcelona. It will be a difficult fixture to kick off the new campaign, but Gaizka Garitano has already expressed that it doesn’t matter to him who they face first because the Lions have to play everyone twice anyway. After hosting Barcelona, Athletic will then travel to Getafe before returning home for the first Basque Derby of the year against Real Sociedad.

The most interesting stretch of the season will take place in February when Athletic will play three straight Basque Derbies. After traveling to Anoeta for a match against Real Sociedad, the Zurigorri will host Osasuna at San Mamés and then hit the road again for a clash with Alavés at the Mendizorrotza. Four games later they will be at Ipurua for another Derby against Eibar.

Qualifying for Europe is the ultimate goal this season, but it won’t be easy. Every team in La Liga is competitive and each point will be vital. Athletic will end the season with matches against Levante, Leganés, and Granada but not before facing Barcelona, Valencia, Real Madrid, and Sevilla in the weeks leading up to the finale.
