Athletic Kick Off Preseason Training At Lezama
Preseason has officially begun for Athletic Club. After manager Gaizka Garitano addressed the media on Thursday afternoon, the team took the field at Lezama for the first training session of the summer. The session began with team pictures followed by a moment of silence to honor the passing of club legend Koldo Aguirre who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 80.
Garitano had 29 players available for training with Gorka Guruzeta limited due to his continued recovery from ACL surgery. Iñigo Martinez, Unai Simón, Unai Nuñez, and Oihan Sancet are still on summer vacation after spending part of their break on international duty. They will report to training later than the rest of their teammates in order to have time to rest and recuperate.
After warmups, the players were put through drills with the ball and also worked in smaller groups with a focus on passing and pressure. Everyone was in good spirits as the players were seen smiling and joking with one another at times. Still, the first training session of the preseason was serious as Garitano already started working on implementing his system. Qualifying for Europe is the ultimate goal this year and the team is dedicated to training hard to be in the best shape possible when the season kicks off in August at San Mamés.
