Unai Nuñez “Athletic Is The Team Of My Dreams, But I Want To Play As Much As Possible”
Unai Nuñez is a European champion. The Athletic defender became a starter for Spain U21 during this summer’s EUROs and played the entirety of Sunday’s 2-1 win over Germany. Now the 22-year-old will enjoy a vacation before returning to Lezama later this summer for preseason training. Last year Nuñez barely saw the field and told Fuera de Juego that he wants to play more in the upcoming season.
“I want to succeed at Athletic. It’s the team of my dreams, but I want to play as much as possible. I can’t say that Yeray and Iñigo don’t deserve to be starters. They’re incredible players but I think I can be at their level. It’s an uncomfortable and difficult situation. I will fight my best to win a starting role and convince the coach.”
This season the Lions will be battling for European competition without many reinforcements. “The market at Athletic is smaller”, explained Nuñez. “Few can play here and that’s what makes us different. With those coming back from loan and being promoted we have an incredible team. We have a squad and a team that can fight for Europe. That is our goal.”
In closing, Nuñez praised his Athletic and Spain teammate Unai Simón whom he believes can become one of the best in football. “Unai Simón is happy, like me, because we are European champions, but his goal was to play. He will be one of the best goalkeepers in Spain and the world because he has that level.” This season both Lezama graduates will be looking to prove themselves at San Mamés.
