Former Athletic Forward Sabin Merino Close To Signing With Deportivo
Sabin Merino’s time at Athletic is over. Last season, the forward had the opportunity to prove himself deserving of a new contract while on loan with Leganés, but failed to establish himself in the team. Now, after 75 appearances and 8 goals over 4 years with Athletic, Merino is looking for a new club to call home and has already received interest from several potential suitors.
Leganés have expressed their desire to sign Merino permanently and he would prefer to continue playing at the highest level. However, after featuring in just 15 matches last season, the 27-year-old is aware that he may not have many chances if he stays at Butarque. Instead, a move to the Segunda may be the best option for the forward to get his career back on track.
Several clubs from the second division have already reached out to Merino with Deportivo leading the race to sign the Lezama product according to a report from Marca. After failing to progress through the promotional playoffs, Deportivo are looking to strengthen their squad for another deep run and believe that Merino will bring experience and fill an important role while also coming on a free transfer. The former Athletic forward still has plenty of time to decide where he will sign, but for now all signs point to Sabin Merino joining Deportivo.
