Athletic Part Ways With Kike Liñero, Director Of Scouting Outside Bizkaia

Rafa Alkorta’s master plan for Lezama is in full swing. Athletic have already hired a new Head of Methodology, replaced several in other positions, and have hired new coaches for 7 of the club’s 14 youth teams. A new era has begun and the goal is for all changes to be in place before the start of preseason.

Athletic have been patient with the announcement of departures and recently revealed that Kike Liñero will also be leaving the club. Liñero coached at the academy from 1994-2009 in various capacities, including managing Bilbao Athletic, which saw him train players such as Fernando Llorente, Iker Muniain, and Markel Susaeta. He would leave for South Korea in 2009 for a new experience and planned to move to China in 2017 to coach the Tianjin Teda U18 team before getting a call from José María Amorrortu.

The former Sporting Director offered Liñero the position of Director of Scouting outside of Bizkaia with a heavy emphasis in Alava, Gipuzkoa, and Navarra. Liñero accepted and has served in this role for the past two years but was not offered a renewal by the new regime. There has been no word from Athletic regarding who will fill the vacancy, though many believe that Alkorta already has a replacement lined up.
