Athletic Announce Preseason Training Trip To Germany

Athletic will travel to Germany for a week of training this summer (AC)

Over the past few years, Athletic have regularly traveled outside the country during the summer for a week of preseason training. So far the Lions have traveled to Germany and Holland and have been expected to do the same this year. While the club has been busy announcing preseason friendlies, many have wondered where the destination would be this time but the wait is finally over.

On Friday Athletic officially announced that the team will travel to Germany on 21 July and will be there through 28 July. The squad will leave for Germany the day following the club’s friendly against Arenas on 20 July and Athletic are expected to play at least two friendlies during their excursion.

When the announcement was first made, it included two friendlies against Paderborn on 27 July and Borussia Monchengladbach on 28 July. However, these were quickly deleted and the new announcement states that matches will be announced later. Both games could still be in the process of scheduling or have perhaps been canceled. Either way, the club will compete in friendlies while training in Germany.

Last summer the team traveled to Dulle where they played in a tournament hosted by Duisburg and faced off against the likes of Mainz, Hannover, and Augsburg.

  • Do they ever play home games during preseason? You visit Bilbao in the summer, only to find the first team off playing in Germany or London or wherever. Does no-one fancy a friendly at San Mamés?
