Athletic Reportedly Sign Great-Granddaughter of Club Legend Belauste
Athletic President Aitor Elizegi and Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta have both made it clear that’s it’s highly unlikely there will be any signings this summer. Those statements, however, were only in reference to the Men’s first team. Strengthening the Women’s team is still very possible and it already appears as though a reinforcement has been signed.
According to reports, Athletic have signed Frankfurt defender Bibiana Schulze-Solano. The 20-year-old was born and raised in Germany, but her mother is Basque. In fact, she’s the great-granddaughter of Athletic legend Patxo Belauste who played for the club in the 1920s and was a delegate for the Basque Country in Mexico when he went into exile during the Spanish Civil War.
The idea of signing a relative of a club legend normally brings excitement, but this potential move came with controversy. Having been born and raised in Germany, many pointed out that Solano was neither born nor formed in the Basque Country which means that she wouldn’t meet the club’s player policy. However, she essentially grew up in the Basque Country. She began playing football on the beach in Lekeitio and even attended the Bizkerre FT youth academy at the Infantil level.
Solano comes from a very historic Basque family. Not only was her great-grandfather a diplomat in Mexico for the Basque Country, her grandmother recently returned important paintings to the Bilbao Museum of Natural History that were hidden for safety by the family during the Spanish Civil War. “Other teams had asked about Bibi, one from the Basque country and another from Liga Iberdrola, but she is going to Athletic because she wants to play at home”, her mother told El Correo.
