It’s been 50 years since Athletic and Elche met in the 1969 Copa Del Rey final. The match ended in a 1-0 victory for the Basques, their first Cup in 11 years. Elche may have lost the game, but it the their only appearance ever in the Cup final and still regarded as a historic fixture to this day.

Last week Athletic held a tribute to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their Cup title. Elche attended the event as well with both clubs sharing a great relationship built over the decades. While in Bilbao, Elche president Diego Garcia took the opportunity to propose a preseason friendly between the two clubs.

Elche have formally invited Athletic to play in the Festa D’Elx, a friendly cup hosted by Elche since 1960. The match, normally held on 15 August, is the 6th oldest summer trophy in Spanish history and Athletic have only featured in it once, losing 2-1 in 1965. If an agreement is reached, the Men’s and Women’s team for both clubs will play friendlies.

Athletic would like to accept the offer, but must first find a date that works for both clubs. “We are looking for the best dates for them”, García admitted. The Lions are still filling out their summer schedule and already have 3 other friendliest set for early August against Numancia, West Ham, and Racing. Finalizing a friendly against Elche would add another key game before the La Liga kicks off.
