Aitor Elizegi “We Can Count On A Great Team This Season”
After spending the last six months analyzing the state of Athletic, new President Aitor Elizegi will have the summer to truly start making changes. Above all else, the Lions must compete for European qualification this season and the President believes they have the squad to do just that. Elizegi recently spoke with EiTB where he explained that he hopes to see a mix of veterans and young stars in the team this season.
“We can count on a great team this season. It will be difficult to stay in the squad this summer because Gaizka has to choose from many players. We all have that dream of the merger between Bilbao Athletic and Athletic, the veterans and the young ones coming up. Five of our young players traveled with Euskadi to Panama which was a great experience for them and shows their quality.”
There’s been speculation that a number of Athletic players will have options to leave the club this summer. Iñaki Williams and Yeray have been regularly linked with other clubs, but Elizegi doesn’t foresee any exits and is sorry to see Alex Remiro leave.
“Williams, Iñigo, Yuri, Yeray, Unai, tomorrow Córdoba…they are all still here. That means there is quality, that there is a team that offers great football. I’m sorry that a young goalkeeper like Remiro doesn’t see playing in goal at San Mamés as an opportunity and doesn’t want to compete with the two great goalkeepers for that position. We must respect that decision, but we don’t share it.”
In closing, the President made it clear that the Lions wasn’t to compete for another Copa Del Rey title. The Basques recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of winning the cup in 1969 and the team feels motivated to make another deep run in the upcoming season. “All Athleticzales are thinking about the Cup every season”, he said with pride. “It’s certain that we start each season with the illusion of being very strong in the Cup. Will will try again. I have seen the images of 50 years ago and everyone is motivated to repeat the title.”
