Markel Susaeta Will Move Abroad To Keep From Playing Against Athletic
It’s been a few weeks since Markel Susaeta, Ander Iturraspe, and Mikel Rico said goodbye to the Athletic fans. The trio enjoyed a special ceremony after the final game of the season at San Mamés and leave the club having featured in over 1,000 games combined. Iturraspe and Rico were not given contract renewals, while Susaeta made the decision that his time at Athletic had come to an end and chose not to sign a new deal.
All three players made it clear that they intend to continue playing football, but the real question is where will they end up. Rico’s case looks decided. The midfielder will return to Huesca who were relegated last season. Iturraspe has attracted interest from several clubs, namely Alavés and PAOK though he has yet to receive any formal offer. The 30-year-old wants to continue playing at the highest level and would be willing to stay in La Liga.
There’s been speculation that Susaeta could sign with his hometown Eibar, but that won’t be the case. The former captain has already decided that he will not accept any offers from Spanish clubs because he doesn’t want to ever have to play against Athletic, reports Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo. In fact, sources claim that the Athletic legend is very interested in following in the footsteps of Andoni Iraola and moving to MLS.
Rico’s future is already clear, but there is still uncertainty for Iturraspe and Susaeta. Both will have several options to choose from this summer though nothing has been decided at this point. Regardless of where they all end up, the trio has served Athletic well during their careers at San Mamés.
