Imanol De La Sota Returns To Lezama As Juvenil A Manager
With every passing day the Lezama coaching staff becomes more clear. Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta has been analyzing the state of the academy since the December election and changes began to take place before the season had even ended. Andoni Bombín was hired as the new Head of Methodology at Lezama, Raul Loroño was promoted to oversee the Player Support Department, and Martin Urrejola became the new head of relations with partnered clubs.
Once the season ended, the next wave of changes came as several Lezama coaches who were hired by José Maria Amorrortu left the club. Alkorta put a specific emphasis on bringing back former players who had experience coaching professional football. Club legend Joseba Etxeberria was hired as the new manager of Bilbao Athletic and Patxi Salinas was presented on Thursday as CD Basconia’s new coach.
Imanol de la Sota is also returning to the club to coach the Juvenil A team, sources confirm. He last managed Juvenil A in 2016 when he led the team to a league title before leaving to join Eibar. In response, current Juvenil A manager Andoni Galiano will take over the Cadete B team. Joan Solaun is expected to be promoted to Juvenil B to continue working with the same players he trained last season. Ander Alaña would then move up from Cadete B to Cadete A. In addition, Iñaki Lafuente is also returning to the club to train goalkeepers, most likely at the Cadete or Infantil level.
Rafa Alkorta has been working on a Lezama project for the past few years and now the era will begin. Aritz Solabarrieta, Iban Fuentes, Ander Breda, Iñaki González, Joxean Álvarez, and Joseba Bikandi have all left the academy and the hope is that their replacements will take Lezama to the next level. As always, the ultimate goal is preparing the next generation for the first team and life at San Mamés.
