Gorka Guruzeta Targets October Return From Torn ACL
Last season didn’t go the way Gorka Guruzeta had hoped. After a very successful campaign with Bilbao Athletic the previous year, the striker was officially promoted to the Athletic first team and was expected to compete for regular minutes. Instead, Guruzeta saw the field on a limited basis and was back with Bilbao Athletic shortly after Christmas.
In total, the 22-year-old made just 9 appearances for the first team and scored one goal. The writing was on the wall in January when the club signed Kenan Kodro to fill in for an injured Aritz Aduriz which meant that the only way Guruzeta would have to return to Bilbao Athletic in order to play regular minutes. It was a natural move for a young player who is still developing, but it didn’t end well.
Guruzeta suffered a torn ACL in a loss to Sporting in late April and underwent successful surgery on 15 May. The injury meant that the Lezama product would be unable to fight for his place in the squad during the preseason and would now have to wait roughly 6 months to be able to get back on the field. In the meantime, Athletic still view Guruzeta as a player with immense potential and the striker is working diligently to return as soon as possible.
While most players are enjoying the summer vacation, Guruzeta is undergoing rehabilitation. The 22-year-old has split his time between Lezama and the clinic of Pamplona-based expert José Vilariño. Recovering from a torn ACL is a long process and Guruzeta wants to do everything in his power to come back stronger than ever. The striker is targeting a return as early as October, though November may be a more realistic expectation.
When Guruzeta does return he will face massive competition for playing time with Iñaki Williams, Aritz Aduriz, Kenan Kodro, and Asier Villalibre all vying for the same position. There’s a chance that the striker could leave on loan in January with regular minutes being crucial for him to get back to his best football. Either way, Gorka Guruzeta is serious about earning his place at San Mamés and should be back on the field before Christmas.
