Sendoa Agirre Hired As Athletic Club Delegate
The winds of change continue to blow at Athletic. President Aitor Elizegi and Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta have had the last 6 months to analyze the state of the club and prepare to put their new project into action. So far, several coaches from Lezama have left but so have a number of others who held various positions. Andoni Imaz, who spent the last 6 years as the club delegate, was one of the departures and his replacement is already confirmed.
Athletic have hired Sendoa Agirre to serve as the new club delegate for the first team. Agirre has served as the delegate for Alavés since 2015 where he was recognized by the Refereeing Committee as the best delegate in the league in 2016-17 and 2017-18. The 43-year-old is widely respected for his character and temperance while serving in the position.
Agirre spent time at Lezama and played for Bilbao Athletic, but never reached the first team. However, he did feature in the club’s centennial match against Brazil in 1998. He would go on to enjoy spells with Barakaldo, Alicante, Hercules, and Alavés before retiring in 2013. Sendoa Agirre’s decision to accept Athletic’s offer presents him with a new challenge to continue as one of La Liga’s premier club delegates.
