Athletic Officially Announce Patxi Salinas As The New Manager Of CD Basconia
Athletic have a specific vision for Lezama under the new Board of Directors with Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta now introducing his project for the academy. One clear goal has been to bring in former players to coach and train the next generation. The club recently announced that Joseba Etxeberria will be the new manager of Bilbao Athletic and that others would follow.
Over the past few weeks, former Athletic defender Patxi Salinas emerged as the top candidate to become the new manager of CD Basconia. Salinas and Alkorta have a great relationship from being teammates at Athletic in the late 1980s and the club was said to view Salinas as the perfect option to fill the role. On Thursday the move became official as Athletic announced that Patxi Salinas has signed a two-year contract to coach Basconia with an option for a third. Jon Moreno will serve as the assistant coach, Iban Urkiza will act as the physical trainer, and Armando Ribeiro will be the goalkeeping coach.
Patxi Salinas already has experience playing and coaching at Lezama. He led the 2009/2010 Juvenil B team to a league title with players like Mikel San José and Ander Iturraspe before leaving to coach professionally. The 55-year-old has spent the better part of the last decade managing clubs in the Segunda B and Tercera and turned down other offers in favor of returning to Athletic. Salinas replaces Iban Fuentes who nearly led Basconia to the promotional playoffs last season and will leave the club this summer.
