Patxi Salinas Set To Be Named The New Manager Of CD Basconia
The Lezama coaching staff is starting to take shape. Club legend Joseba Etxeberria was recently presented as the new manager of Bilbao Athletic and more appointments will follow. Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta has put a heavy emphasis on bringing in former Athletic players to help develop the next generation and it won’t stop with Etxeberria.
According to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano El Correo, Patxi Salinas will be the new manager of CD Basconia. The club has been in talks with the former player for some time and an agreement is expected within the coming days. Salinas already has experience coaching at Lezama after leading the Juvenil B team in 2009/2010 – where he trained players such as Mikel San José and Ander Iturraspe – and will return to the club to oversee the Basauritarras.
“There has been contact with Athletic”, Salinas admitted in a recent interview. “I have been offered the position, but I have not signed anything nor is there anything closed. I don’t see training at Lezama as a step back. I love training young players and I would be happy to work at the club I was a player at just 18 years old. I would not mind training the third team at a club like Athletic.” Salinas has been approached by several clubs but has chosen to return to Athletic.
Patxi Salinas came up through Lezama and would go on to spend 10 years at Athletic before finishing his career with Celta Vigo. After one season managing the Juvenil B team at Lezama, Salinas continued coaching and most recently was in charge of Badajoz after leading Burgos to the Segunda B the previous year. Rafa Alkorta’s goal is to have two very distinguished coaches at Bilbao Athletic and Basconia to work alongside Gaizka Garitano and views Patxi Salinas as the perfect candidate to lead Basconia next season.
