Former Athletic Goalkeeper Alex Remiro Officially Signs With Real Sociedad
The Alex Remiro soap opera is finally over.
Before last season even began there was drama in Bilbao. Kepa Arrizabalaga had left for Chelsea, Iago Herrerín was injured, and all signs pointed to Remiro stepping out of the shadows and taking over as the club’s starting goalkeeper. The Lezama product had proven himself the prior year while on loan with Huesca, but when the first game of the season arrived Remiro wasn’t even included in the squad.
Everyone had expected Remiro to be making his debut and filling the void left by Arrizabalaga, but that didn’t happen. Instead, it was Unai Simón playing his first minutes at San Mamés with Hodei Oleaga sitting on the bench as the backup. Questions were immediately raised and then promptly answered after the match.
Remiro has been kept out of the squad due to the fact that he had recently rejected a contract renewal. Being in the final year of his deal, Athletic didn’t want to hand the goalkeeper a starting role and the club made it clear that he wouldn’t be available to play until he signed an extension.
Days turned to weeks and then to months. More information came to light when then-President Josu Urrutia explained that Remiro had demanded similar wages to Arrizabalaga despite having never played a minute in the Primera. Athletic would go on to make a few more improved offers to the shot-stopper but Remiro eventually told the club that he refused to negotiate any further and would be leaving in the summer when his deal expired.
After winning the Presidency in December, Aitor Elizegi announced his intentions to sit down with Remiro in hopes of repairing the situation. It was too late, however, as Remiro once again refused to listen to any offers. His mind was made up.
Throughout the entire ordeal, there were constant reports that Remiro had already reached an agreement to sign with Real Sociedad. Some suggested that the goalkeeper was already in talks before the preseason began because he knew that he would not get minutes with Arrizabalaga at the club at the time. More reliable reports claimed that Remiro and Real Sociedad had finalized a deal before Christmas that would require a financial penalty if either party backed out before it could be formally announced.
Whatever level of contact the two had before the season ended, Remiro’s future has now been decided. Real Sociedad officially announced on Monday that the 24-year-old has signed a contract with the club that will run through 2023. The presentation won’t take place until next month after Remiro’s contract with Athletic officially expires.
Leaving Athletic for Real Sociedad will surely add more drama to the Basque rivalry. It may be some time before the full story of what happened between Alex Remiro and the Zurigorri is brought to light, but fans will certainly have their own opinions regarding where the blame should be placed. Regardless, the Lezama product leaves Athletic having never made his debut with the first team and will now take the next step in his career at Anoeta.
