Athletic Have Reportedly Ruled Out A Summer Move For Iñigo Ruiz De Galarreta
When preseason training starts on 4 July Athletic manager Gaizka Garitano will have a squad of 33 players that will need to be trimmed. With the Lions failing to qualify for Europe there won’t be extra minutes to go around and the coach is expected to go into the season with a team of 23-25 players. There won’t be a place for everyone, though the club is also looking for ways to strengthen the group this summer.
Alex Berenguer has been the named most linked with a move to San Mamés. The 23-year-old winger is seen as the club’s priority to add depth on the wing, however reaching a transfer agreement with Torino won’t be easy. Alain Oyarzun and Kike Barja have also been touted as possible prospects, as has Las Palmas midfielder Iñigo Ruiz De Galarreta.
Since leaving Athletic in 2016, Galarreta has finally put injuries behind him and is starting to live up to the potential that he showed while at Lezama. Last season he was one of the best players in the Segunda and sources believe that the 25-year-old will move to a La Liga club this summer. Athletic Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta has admitted that the club is keeping a close eye on Galarreta and recent rumors suggest that the Lions are gearing up to submit an offer to Las Palmas.
While Athletic may be watching Galarreta closely, the club has ruled out a transfer this summer according to a report from Alfonso Herrán of AS. Adding depth on the wing is the club’s priority and there are already several players competing for the same position that Galarreta would occupy were he to return. The summer is long and things can always change. Galarreta has repeatedly statedly that it would be a dream to go back to Athletic, but it doesn’t appear as though that will be happening this summer.
