Athletic Club Announce Preseason Friendlies Against Numancia And Racing

Celebrate Alaves

Athletic will play 3 friendlies in 4 days in August (AC)

Athletic’s preseason schedule is beginning to take shape. The players will report to training in less than one month, on 4 July, and will begin preparing for what will be a crucial season for the club’s future. After failing to qualify for European competition for two consecutive years the goal for the next campaign is crystal clear.

The first summer friendly was officially announced a few days ago with Athletic traveling to England on 3 August to face off with West Ham in the Betway Cup. On Friday the club revealed two more matches that will also take place just before the start of the La Liga season. Both games will come against clubs from Spain’s second division.

Athletic will travel to Soria on 1 August to face off with Numancia at Los Pajaritos. The Basques have a great relationship with Numancia, having sent several players on loan to the Segunda side, which will be strengthened through this friendly. Athletic will then make the trip to Santander on 4 August, the day after the Betway Cup, where they will play Racing in a friendly at El Sardinero.

With these three friendlies being so close together it’s very likely that Gaizka Garitano will split up the squad for the trips. The manager has a difficult task of trimming the team this summer and preseason games will help him identify the players who can play an important role. The club is still working to schedule other friendlies for the coming months, as well as the yearly trip abroad with Germany, Austria, and Holland all being potential venues.
