Athletic Cadete Win Torneo Piru Gainza With 3-0 Victory Over Real Sociedad
The 21st Torneo Piru Gainza was held over the weekend, a youth tournament created by the Peña Piru Gainza, in which Athletic’s Cadete team faced off with several others. To begin the group stage, the Katxorros defeated Espanyol 1-0 with the lone goal coming from Ibai Asenjo. The team then drew 1-1 with Le Havre, as Asenjo scored his second goal of the tournament.
Four points were enough for Athletic to top the group and book their place in the final on Sunday against Real Sociedad. The two teams kicked off at noon and went into the halftime break with Athletic ahead 1-0 thanks to yet another goal from Asenjo. In the second half Asenjo would score his second while Ibai Sanz added a third to secure a 3-0 win.
It was an impressive performance from the Athletic Cadete team who won the title for the first time in 5 years. Ibai Asenjo was named the tournament’s top scorer with 4 goals. The Zurigorri also competed in the Copa Euskadi Infantil, defeating Lakua 3-0 in the opening game followed by a 5-1 victory over Tolosa. Athletic then overcame Antiguoko in penalties before defeating Danok Bat 2-1 with goals from Alemu and Aimar Vicandi on Sunday to win the title.
Athletic Infantil San Mamés (06) also won a title on Sunday in a tournament hosted by Aviron Bayonnais. The Kumeak were victorious in all 8 games, scoring 30 goals and not conceding even once. Eneko Ellakuria was named the player of the tournament. Athletic Juvenil were defeated 2-1 by Villarreal in the quarterfinals of the tournament hosted by CD Acero in celebration of the club’s 100 years.
