Rafa Alkorta “Nobody Has Contacted Us About Yeray”
Yeray has become one of the most important players at Athletic and his spectacular performances haven’t gone unnoticed. Last week a report revealed that Atlético Madrid are considering paying the defender’s €30 million release clause. A few days later Rafa Alkorta admitted that the interest isn’t surprising and the Sporting Director has once again commented on the situation.
“Yeray has a contract, a contract until 2022, and a clause that we can point other clubs to”, Alkorta told reports during Joseba Etxeberria’s presentation. “The other day I said that it’s normal that there are teams watching him because he has been one of the best center-backs in La Liga. It’s normal that there are rumors and teams who want to sign him, but he has a contract and a clause and nobody has contacted us.”
As things stand right now, Yeray is expected to continue at Athletic for a couple of reasons. First, Atlético Madrid are close to closing a deal for Espanyol’s Mario Hermoso to strengthen their defense which would fill the need at the back. More importantly, talks have gone well and Yeray and Athletic are hoping to finalize a contract renewal before the preseason begins which would significantly raise his wages and release clause.
Anything can happen in football, but Yeray has always been vocal about succeeding at his boyhood club. After beating cancer twice the 24-year-old has become a fan favorite at San Mamés and has established himself as a leader in the team. A new contract appears to be close and it may only be a matter of time between Yeray commits his future to Athletic Club.
