Former Athletic Club Striker Gaizka Toquero Retires From Football
Gaizka Toquero will always be revered by Athletic fans. The striker signed with the Lions in the summer of 2008 and would go on to make over 200 appearances until leaving for Alavés in 2015. From the way he played the game and trademark celebration to his constant hard work and dedication, Toquero won the hearts of Athleticzales who were sad to see him go even if his time at the club had come to an end.
Lehendakari, as he was affectionately known, helped lead Alavés to promotion in his first season back at the club and continued at the Mendizorrotza the following year before joining Zaragoza in 2017. Unfortunately, Toquero was forced to undergo knee surgery last summer and missed the entirety of the 2018/2019 season. Despite doing everything possible to return to the field his career has come to a close.
On Thursday Gaizka Toquero officially announced his retirement from football. The 34-year-old enjoyed a lengthy and productive career and easily won over the fans no matter what shirt he was wearing. Always with a smile on his face and a knack for scoring goals in the biggest moments, Toquero was pure joy. Athletic’s number 2 was the type of player that you always want on your team and his retirement is a sad day for the world of football. Ari Ari Ari, Toquero Lehendakari!
