Aitor Elizegi confirms Athletic won’t pursue Fernando Llorente (AC)

The case of Fernando Llorente is closed. Athletic tried to sign the Tottenham striker in January before an injury to Harry Kane put a halt on the transfer. The club were expected to return for Llorente this summer but many fans were upset about the potential return because of the way he left the club in 2013. Since then the club made the decision not to pursue the 34-year-old and Aitor Elizegi confirmed that on the radio Wednesday night.

“I don’t see a place for Llorente in the current squad”, said the Athletic President. “There is no possibility of signing another 9 now. We already have four and our hope is that those four keep improving and keep scoring goals. I want to see Williams continue to surprise. I want to see Aritz 100% again, and Villalibre has killed for his opportunity.”

The President went on to discuss the possibility of making signings this summer, noting that failing to qualify for Europe will make things more difficult. “We will have to be careful with the expenses because of not qualifying for Europe, but the finances are good.” Recent reports suggest that Athletic could be in the market for a new winger, but that may be the only transfer.

Elizegi championed the idea of reintroducing the Grada de Animación and fans are excited about what could come. “We will continue talking to the Socios one by one until there is a Grada de Animación that roars every day” Elizegi explained when asked about the topic. “We will also propose changing the name of the VIP section to that of one of the Athletic legends.” The new Board was unable to truly introduce their vision during the season but some changes have already been made and many more will come this summer.
