Athletic Club Interested In Signing Torino Winger Alex Berenguer
Another year without European competition means that it will likely be a quiet summer at Athletic. The club will find it hard to spend heavily during the upcoming transfer window, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t looking at possible reinforcements. Manager Gaizka Garitano wants to add depth on the wings and the club has already been linked with a few options.
Numancia’s Alain Oyarzun and Osasuna’s Kike Barja have been monitored by Athletic over the past few months, as well as a familiar face. According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, the Lions are also interested in signing Torino winger Alex Berenguer. Athletic tried to bring Berenguer to San Mamés two years ago, but Osasuna demanded the full €9 million release clause before eventually selling the winger to Torino for €5 million.
It took Berenguer some time to find his footing in Italy. Last season the 23-year-old made 31 appearances, scoring 2 goals and providing 4 assists. Garitano believes that he would fit well in the Athletic system while also providing needed depth at an important position. Berenguer is also said to be interested in a return to Spain after Eibar tried to sign him last summer.
Finalizing a transfer for Alex Berenguer won’t be easy. Torino will surely want to make a profit and it’s also important to remember that Berenguer agreed to an anti-Athletic clause when he left Osasuna. This clause would guarantee that Osasuna would get a portion of the transfer fee which will further raise the price. It will ultimately be up to Garitano to decide if signing Berenguer is a priority or if another option, possibly youth, would be a better alternative.
