Unai Vencedor Will Stay Close To The Athletic First Team Despite Not Being Called To Preseason Training
Athletic recently announced that six players from Bilbao Athletic will spend the preseason training with the first team, but there was a surprise. Midfielder Unai Vencedor was not included in the list after signing a contract renewal in December. The 18-year-old was expected to spend the summer with the senior squad and being left out of the call-up quickly raised questions.
Vencedor has shown immense potential and it’s only natural that he is attracting interest. Before signing a renewal it was reported that clubs in England were willing to pay his then €2 million release clause which was raised to €30 million when he extended his deal through 2023. A report from Javier Beltrán of El Correo reveals that a few clubs are still watching the Lezama product closely, but his goal is to succeed at Athletic.
After an impressive season with Bilbao Athletic, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Vencedor would train with the first team over the summer. That won’t be the case, but there’s a good reason for it as explained in Beltrán report. Athletic have already explained to Vencedor that they want him to stay with Bilbao Athletic where he can continue his development under the guidance of Joseba Etxeberria. That being said, he is valued by Gaizka Garitano who will keep him close to the first team during the season.
The six players who have been called to train this summer are in difficult situations. All of them will find it hard to earn a place in the squad and those who don’t will leave on loan. Athletic do not want Vencedor to spend the year abroad and would rather him stay put and in position to hopefully make his debut at some point during the year. Still just 18 years old, Unai Vencedor is viewed as a potential star of the future and Athletic want to be very careful with his progression in order to help him realize his potential.
