CD Basconia To Sign Urduliz Forward Iker Pedernales
Athletic were one of the first clubs to share in the celebration of Urduliz who recently earned promotion to the Tercera for the first time in history. The small club from Bizkaia topped their regional group, just beating out Iurretako on goal differential, and will also have the opportunity to qualify for a place in the opening rounds of the Copa del Rey next season.
It’s been a special year for Urduliz who saw several players step up in big ways including Iker Pedernales. The 20-year-old winger was third in the team in scoring, netting seven goals, and is now set to sign with CD Basconia this summer according to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS. Athletic scouts Blas Ziarreta and Boluka Portillo both traveled to watch Pedernales this season and, if all goes well, he will be incorporated into the Basconia squad.
Pedernales is a very interesting prospect and not just because he’s a promising young winger with plenty of room for improvement. He is a dual-sport athlete, having spent time as a cyclist with Basati Bike before recently being forced to choose between cycling and football. Pedernales chose to continue playing football but is also enrolled in Pharmacy school.
It’s no surprise that Pedernales has stood out for his composure, endurance, and pace on the wing with his cycling background. The 20-year-old played a pivotal role in helping Urduliz make history and will now have the opportunity to take his career to the next level at Basconia. Pedernales is the second signing for Basconia this summer along with Leioa goalkeeper Gorka Campo.
