Athletic And Yeray Hope To Finalize Contract Renewal Before The Start Of Preseason Training
Yeray deserves the highest praise for his performances last season. The 24-year-old was one of the best center-backs in all of La Liga and is quickly establishing himself as a leader in the Athletic team. It’s no surprise that other clubs have taken notice with Atlético Madrid rumored to be interested in paying the defender’s €30 million release clause.
Despite the interest, Yeray is expected to continue at Athletic. He and the club have been in renewal talks for the last few weeks with both sides wanting to get a deal done as soon as possible. Yeray last signed a renewal back in 2017 which runs through 2022 and it’s clearly time for an improved contract to accurately reflect his place in the team.
As things stand right now Yeray’s wages are lower than nearly every starter in the lineup but that will change. The defender also wants to extend the duration of his deal and is more than willing to significantly raise his release clause as well. Talks have gone very well with Rafa Alkorta overseeing the discussions and both sides hope to finalize an agreement before preseason training starts on 4 July according to a report from Javier Beltrán of El Correo.
Yeray has made 79 appearances for Athletic since joining the first team in 2016, however he would have already surpassed 100 had he not battled cancer twice. Still just 24 years old, Yeray is already one of the most important players at San Mamés and well on his way to building an impressive career with the Zurigorri.
