Athletic Announce 6 Bilbao Athletic Starlets Will Train With The First Team This Summer
After narrowly missing out on European qualification last season this summer will be a time of change. Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta will be instituting his master plan for Lezama while also looking to strengthen the first team for another run at the top seven. The squad is in need of revitalization and Gaizka Garitano is ready to usher in a new era for the Lions.
On Saturday the club officially announced that six stars from Bilbao Athletic will train with the first team this summer: Iñigo Vicente, Asier Villalibre, Gaizka Larrazabal, Oihan Sancet, Hodei Oleaga, and Dani Vivian. All six of the Lezama products have signed a contract renewal in the past year, committing their future to Athletic.
Vicente and Sancet already have experience after spending last summer with the first team before returning to Bilbao Athletic. Both are seen as very promising players for the future and have a realistic chance of earning a place in Garitano’s squad. Villalibre, Larrazabal, Oleaga, and Vivian were not surprises either as it was already written into their recent renewals that they would spend the summer with the first team.
While it’s unlikely that all six players will be able to establish themselves in the first team this summer, the club views each one as someone who could become a key player at some point down the road. Interestingly, Unai Vencedor was not included in the preseason squad despite renewing his contract back in December and being one of the best players for Bilbao Athletic last season.
