Asier Villalibre has proven that he can have a bright future at Athletic. After three underwhelming loan spells, the young striker returned to Bilbao Athletic last season where he exploded. Villalibre led the entire Segunda B with 23 goals while also adding 5 assists. With his contract set to expire there was concern over his future but that has finally been settled.

On Friday Athletic officially announced that Villalibre has signed a contract renewal that will run through 2023. The new deal will see the 21-year-old promoted to the first team and also includes a €50 million release clause. Villalibre had other offers, even some from outside Spain, but his only goal was to continue at Athletic.

“I’m very happy and grateful to the club for this opportunity”, Villalibre told Athletic TV. “Signing a renewal means I’ve done things well. I’ve matured a lot and I’ve also improved my football, especially attacking mobility. I’ve improved the most psychologically.” It’s clear that the Lezama product was able to rediscover his best form by staying at Bilbao Athletic which wasn’t an easy decision.

“I decided to play. I’m still young and it was a good decision that gave me many minutes and goals. I didn’t have many minutes on loan and it felt like I lost a year, but I learned about football being around good players. I had to value myself and what is here. It’s not easy to overcome the pressure and my family has helped me a lot. We have to be patient because we are very young.” Asier Villalibre will now have the opportunity to earn his place in the first team squad this summer.
