Lezama Coaches Aritz Solabarrieta, Iban Fuentes, And Ander Breda Leave Athletic Club
Now that the football season has come to a close Athletic Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta will begin implementing his master plan for Lezama. The former Athletic defender has spent the last two years building his model for the academy along with Andoni Ayarza with the goal of making Lezama the best youth system in football. Many changes will take place, the first of which will see three coaches leave the club.
Athletic have officially announced that Aritz Solabarrieta, Iban Fuentes, and Ander Breda will not continue at Lezama next season. Solabarrieta joined the academy in 2015 and led the Juvenil A team to one of the best seasons in history back in 2017/2018. Last season he was promoted to manager of CD Basconia and would then take over Bilbao Athletic just a few months later when Gaizka Garitano was given command of the first team. Joseba Etxeberria is expected to be named as the new coach of Bilbao Athletic.
Iban Fuentes has been coaching at Lezama since 2007 and began the season as the manager of the Juvenil B squad. The team enjoyed massive success to start the year before Fuentes was promoted to Basconia to replace Solabarrieta. Interestingly, Basconia played their best football of the season under Fuentes and were in contention to finish in the top 4 of the league table.
Ander Breda joined the academy in 2017 and began the season as the assistant coach to Fuentes. After the coaching changes in December, Breda was named as the manager of Juvenil B and continued to lead the team to success. The Katxorros won the league title with Breda at the helm.
All three managers have served Lezama well but a new era is coming for the academy. Rafa Alkorta hopes to bring back several former players who went through the youth system to coach at Lezama. Athletic thanked Solabarrieta, Fuentes, and Breda for their service saying, “We want to show all of them the recognition for their dedication and commitment on the part of our club and wish them the best of luck in their future professional endeavors.”
