Leganés Hoping To Retain Athletic Club’s Mikel Vesga
Mikel Vesga’s loan spell with Legés went about as well as he could have hoped. The midfielder quickly established himself in the starting lineup, featuring in 25 games this year, and was the picture of consistency. Now, with Ander Iturraspe and Mikel Rico having left the club, Vesga will have the chance to earn his place in the Athletic squad this summer.
Despite his impressive performances this season, Vesga isn’t guaranteed a place in the Gaizka Garitano team. Dani García, Beñat, and Mikel San Joes all stand in his way while Oihan Sancet, Unai Vencedor, and Peru Nolaskoain will also be competing for a role. That being said, Vesga have shown that he has the quality to play in the Primera and he certainly has options if he doesn’t stay with Athletic.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Leganés are hoping to retain Vesga next season. Los Pepineros are really impressed with how the 26-year-old performed while on loan and would like to sign Vesga outright. If that isn’t possible, they would at least be interested in having him stay on loan for another year. Of course, everything is contingent on whether or not Vesga is able to convince Garitano this summer.
It’s no surprise that Leganés want to keep Vesga. The midfielder was a very important player for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side who also boast other former Athletic players in Unai Bustinza and Javier Eraso. Vesga may be in a good position to earn his place at Athletic this summer but it won’t be easy. Still just 26, Vesga has the quality and strengths to be successful in Garitano’s system if given the opportunity.
