Ángel Villacampa Named New Manager Of Athletic Femenino
New Athletic Femenino manager Ángel Villacampa (AC)
Joseba Agirre is one of the most successful managers in the history of Athletic Femenino. Coaching the Neskak since 2015, Agirre led the Women’s team to a league title in his first season as well as the Basque Cup every year in charge. After so much success it was announced in March that Agirre would be moving into the role of Sporting Director at the end of the season.
Athletic have been one of the leading clubs in the growth and development of Women’s football so replacing Agirre wouldn’t be easy. The goal has always been to bring in another top manager to lead the team and hopefully sustain the success that has already been established. Finally, there is clarity.
On Thursday the club officially announced that they have hired Ángel Villacampa as the new manager of Athletic Femenino. Villacampa is one of the most decorated coaches in Spanish Women’s football having led Atlético Madrid to a Copa de la Reina title in 2016 followed by two league titles in the following years. Villacampa is also the only manager to lead his team to an unbeaten season and at one point went 46 straight games without defeat at Atlético.
Throughout his managerial career, Villacampa has always been an attack-minded coach. During his unbeaten season, Atlético scored 91 goals while conceding just 17 times. This year Villacampa served as the manager of the China U-16 team but has made the decision to join Athletic because he is excited about the project at Lezama and the work that the club has been doing to develop Women’s football.
