Beñat suffered a fractured finger in Athletic 3-1 win over Celta (AC)

As the football season progresses, so to do injuries. By the end of the year, many players are competing with some level of discomfort and the summer is an important time to recover and rest. Just having the time off is enough for some to get back to 100%, but others require further treatment or operations to repair issues. That is the case for Athletic midfielder Beñat Etxebarria.

Athletic announced on Wednesday that the 32-year-old suffered a fractured finger on his left hand during the 3-1 win over Celta Vigo back on 12 May. Due to damage in the joint, he will be undergoing surgery on Thursday to repair the issue. After the operation he will have the summer to recover before joining his teammates at the start of preseason training.

Beñat played a vital role in the team this season, making 29 appearances across all competitions. The midfielder scored 2 goals, provided 3 assists, and formed a strong partnership with Dani García. He will be expected to continue playing at a high level next season as Athletic seek to qualify for European competition.
