Asier Villalibre Reportedly Agrees To 4-Year Contract Renewal With Athletic Club
Returning to Bilbao Athletic last season proved to be the perfect move for Asier Villalibre. After three unsuccessful loan spells the 21-year-old scored 23 goals this year for the Katxorros and proved that he could have a future with the first team. He will have the chance to earn his place this summer.
Villalibre’s current contract is set to expire in June and there have been questions raised about his future. With the likes of Iñaki Williams, Aritz Aduriz, and Kenan Kodro standing in his way the young striker will face plenty of competition. That being said, the club has been confident about a renewal which now appears to be finalized.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Asier Villalibre has agreed to a new 4-year renewal with Athletic that will run through 2023. Several clubs from outside Spain showed interest in signing the Lezama product, but Villalibre wants to succeed at Athletic. The release clause is unknown at this point but the new contract would see Villalibre officially promoted to the first team.
The club have yet to announce anything, but sources are in agreement that Villalibre’s renewal is finalized. Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta even eluded to the deal on Wednesday saying, “We hope to finalize an agreement soon.” Alkorta went on to praise the striker who he believes can become an important player. “I expect a lot from Asier and the subject will be solved in a short time. He’s had a fantastic year. After being on loan it’s very difficult to go back to Bilbao Athletic and start over again. I’m sure he’s going to surprise us and we have a lot of expectations for him.”
After a very impressive season with Bilbao Athletic where the striker led all goalscorers in the Segunda B, the 21-year-old will become a first team player. In the meantime, he will travel to Panama with 9 other Athletic players for the Basque National Team friendly against Panama on 29 May.
