Aritz Aduriz Signs Contract Renewal With Athletic Club Through 2020
The future of Aritz Aduriz has been a major uncertainty for the last few months. After suffering a serious knee injury back in January that sidelined him for months there was concern that the 38-year-old would choose to retire at the end of the season. Athletic failing to qualify for Europe was seen as another blow, but Gaizka Garitano remained confident that they would be able to convince Aduriz to continue. Now it’s official.
On Monday the club released a video with the caption “Aduriz has something to tell you.” The video began with the striker in the locker room. He looked around, packed his boots in a bag, then packed his shirt as well. Aduriz walked down the tunnel and onto the field at San Mamés, seemingly to take it all in one last time.
At that point, Aduriz unzipped his jacket to reveal that he was wearing next year’s shirt and raised his arms in celebration. His number 20 then saw another 20 written beside it to indicate that he was renewing until 2020. The video concluded with Aduriz smiling full of joy.
After the video was released, Athletic officially announced that Aduriz has signed a renewal through 2020. The striker will continue at the club next season and will also be giving a press conference at 4pm at San Mamés. Throughout his career Aduriz has made 390 appearances for Athletic and is the 6th leading scorer in club history with 171 goals.
