Alex Remiro Says Goodbye To Athletic Club
Alex Remiro is no longer an Athletic player. The goalkeeper arrived at Lezama 10 years ago as a teenager, but this season was his last with the club. After refusing to sign a renewal offer at the beginning of the campaign Remiro was sidelined throughout the entire year and his contract will officially expire on 30 June.
The entire saga was full of drama. From rumors suggesting that Remiro was demanding the same wages as former Athletic keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to claims that he had already agreed to a contract with Real Sociedad, there were plenty of explanations as to why he had decided to leave his boyhood club. The exact reason hasn’t been revealed but Remiro took the time to say goodbye to Athletic and his teammates in a message posted on Wednesday.
Today I say goodbye to what has been my home for the last 10 years. I want to show my gratitude to the institution that has given me the possibility of fulfilling the dream of becoming a professional footballer, and to each and every one of the people who have helped me become a football player and grow as a person.
I especially want to mention my coaches this season, Eduardo Berizzo and Gaizka Garitano, exceptional professionals, empathic and understanding, and to all my teammates, with capital letters, a true human group, who have treated me with so much affection and respect from the first moment.
And finally, of course, also to my family that has always been by my side and has supported me in difficult times.
To all of them, thank you with all my heart.
On the other hand, this has not been an easy year. Sometimes things are not as one would wish and you have to know how to assume reality with maturity and professionalism. I have tried to face it with humility, looking for new challenges and illusions that allow me to follow my path and do what I like the most, playing football and performing as a player.
A hug to everyone.
