Mikel Vesga Ready To Earn His Place At Athletic Club This Summer
Mikel Vesga is something of an enigma. After impressing with Bilbao Athletic, the midfielder was promoted to the first team in 2016 where he was unable to establish himself in the squad. Vesga then enjoyed a very successful loan spell with Sporting Gijon before returning to Athletic and, once again, failed to stand out. Last summer the Alavés product left again, this time joining Leganés on loan, with hopes of proving himself.
The move was a success. Vesga quickly entrenched himself as one of the most important players in Mauricio Pellegrino’s team, featuring in 25 games this season. The 26-year-old has been the epitome of consistency and has proven that he can compete at a high level in the Primera. This summer he will return to Athletic and Gaizka Garitano will give him the opportunity to earn his place in the squad.
Looking back, two things prevented Vesga from being productive at Athletic. When he was first brought up to the team he wasn’t given many opportunities. Then, after returning from Sporting, Kuko Ziganda played the midfielder out of position and didn’t utilize his strengths. After proving himself for a second time, the hope is that Garitano will know how to get the best out of Vesga.
With Ander Iturraspe and Mikel Rico leaving this summer, and the future of Unai López in question, Vesga is ready to earn his place. Garitano will give him that opportunity when preseason training starts. Vesga has shown that he has the quality to succeed, but there will be competition. It’s clear after this season that the Athletic squad needs to be rejuvenated and Mikel Vesga could very well be one of the players who could become the future of the Zurigorri midfield. This may be the most important summer of his career.
