Iñaki Williams “When The Next Season Starts The Goal Is To Qualify For Europe”
Athletic were unable to qualify for Europe on the final day of the season, but it was still a big year for the Lions. Iñaki Williams doesn’t necessarily see the result as a failure, though it’s certainly disappointing. The striker believes that there should be praise for the way the team turned around the season and rubbished the idea that Athletic didn’t want to finish seventh.
“It’s a very disappointing time and to finish this way hurts even more. We had a spectacular second half of the season. We have overcome adversity, but we couldn’t qualify for Europe. The way the season went the second half has been spectacular. It’s amazing, but we didn’t get the icing on the cake. Anyone who thinks we didn’t want to be 7th is ignorant.”
Williams has the best season of his career, scoring 15 total goals and taking on a vital role in the team. That being said, the 24-year-old wasn’t happy with his performance and Saturday.
“I have worked like an animal to give my best in every game. It bothers me that I didn’t have a good game against Sevilla because I needed to be better and I want to help the team. Our mentality was to take all three points. We don’t know how to play conservatively. It wasn’t a good first half, but the second was better. It’s frustrating because we had a chance in the final moments.”
Now that the season is over Williams is already looking forward to next year. After the improvement the team made under Gaizka Garitano, the striker made it clear that Athletic’s goal will be qualifying for Europe
“When the next season starts the goal is to qualify for Europe. One could say it’s a failure, but after the way the season has gone, it’s a pity. We must be fair. We know how hard we’ve worked and that we left our skin and soul on the field. We didn’t qualify for Europe, but we did turn around a situation that was very complicated.”
With Garitano at the helm, Athletic were one of the top 5 teams in La Liga. A lot will change around the league this summer, but the Lions will begin summer training with the sole goal of qualifying for Europe. The foundation has been set and there’s plenty of reason to be excited about the future.
