Iker Muniain “We Have To Recognize What We Have Done”
The La Liga season didn’t end the way Athletic had hoped. One point would have been enough for the Lions to qualify for Europe on the final day of the season, but a 2-0 loss to Sevilla saw Athletic end the year 8th in the table. Iker Muniain gave his thoughts on the matter after Saturday’s match admitting that the team is extremely disappointed.
“I don’t know if the word is failure. Yes, we are very disappointed. I’m angry because we weren’t able to do it. We tried to put balls into the box and we had the chance when it hit the crossbar, but there was no reward. Despite the bad feeling, this team can’t be reproached for anything. We have to recognize what we have done, that it’s been an amazing comeback. We arrived on the last day with an incredible opportunity.”
Despite failing to qualify for Europe, Muniain is still proud of the way Athletic turned the season around. The captain understands that it’s hard for fans to think about that right now and says that the team must immediately start preparing for next season.
“We finished the year strong, competing for seventh place, but we missed the goal. It stings because it was an objective and we fell short. This team has spirit and we have shown that we will always fight. Fans are left with a bad feeling because we didn’t qualify and maybe what we have accomplished is forgotten right now. We have to rest and prepare for the next battle.”
With Markel Susaeta leaving the club this summer Iker Muniain will become the new captain of Athletic. The Zurigorri will begin a new era with Gaizka Garitano at the helm and next year’s goal will certainly be qualifying for Europe.
