Liverpool And Other Clubs Continue To Show Interest In Athletic Star Iñaki Williams
Iñaki Williams has had his very best season since joining the Athletic first team. With Aritz Aduriz sidelined for several months due to a knee injury, it was up to Williams to step up and that’s exactly what he did. The 24-year-old has scored 15 goals across all competitions, while also registering 3 assists, and has proven that he can be the one to lead the Athletic attack for years to come.
With Williams playing at such a high level, and still with room to improve, it’s no surprise that several clubs have shown interest in the Lezama product. Liverpool have been chasing his signature for the past two years and are once again hopeful according to reports in the country. Other clubs in England, Germany, and Italy, namely AC Milan and Inter, have also expressed their desire to sign the striker.
Williams certainly deserves the attention. That being said, it’s extremely unlikely that anything will come of it. After renewing his contract with Athletic in 2018, when Liverpool were ready to pay his release clause, his new clause will rise to €88 million this summer and will increase every year through 2025. Even if a club was willing to meet that price, Williams has been very vocal about his desire to stay at Athletic. He’s regularly expressed that the club has given him everything and he wants to retire as an Athletic legend.
When it comes to football anything can happen. Everything is unpredictable, but Williams has gone out of the way on several occasions to reaffirm his desire to continue at San Mamés. Clubs will no doubt continue to line up in hopes of convincing the 24-year-old to leave, but it doesn’t look like that is going to be happening anytime soon. Rumors, however, likely aren’t going away.
