Athletic Identify Gorka Bidaurrazaga As The Top Target To Manage CD Basconia Next Season
The La Liga season may end next weekend, but the Athletic Board the real work will begin. New President Aitor Elizegi will immediately begin working on implementing his plans and vision for the club, while Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta will do the same with his Lezama project. Joseba Etxeberria is expected to take over as the manager of Bilbao Athletic, but that won’t be the only coaching change.
Iban Fuentes has done a masterful job since taking over as the manager of CD Basconia back in December. At the time the team was struggling in the middle of the table and now sit 6th, just two points off of the promotional playoff zone. Despite the improvement, the club is looking to make a change here as well and have already identified their top candidate.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of El Correo, Athletic are hoping to sign Gorka Bidaurrazaga as the next manager of Basconia. Alkorta believes that Bidaurrazaga is the perfect man for the job and that’s based on several factors. The current Deusto coach has a fabulous track record working with young players, has experience coaching in the Tercera, and understands Athletic well as he graduated from Lezama before making his first team debut.
Hiring Bidaurrazaga isn’t a done deal at this point. The manager has done well with Deusto who would love for him to stay at the club. If that happens, Athletic are also interested in signing Patxi Salinas who has already admitted that he would like to return to the club, even if it means coaching a youth team. Promoting Jon Solaun is also an option while the future of Iban Fuentes is unknown at this point.
