Athletic Announce Markel Susaeta Will Leave The Club This Summer After Choosing Not To Renew Contract
The past few months haven’t been easy for Markel Susaeta. At one point sources were in agreement that the Athletic captain would not be offered a contract renewal and would be leaving his boyhood club at the end of the season. Then, Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta recently stated in an interview that the club would sit down with Susaeta to negotiate a new deal. There’s been plenty of confusion and uncertainty about the situation, but now there is finally a conclusion.
Athletic officially announced late Monday evening that Susaeta will not continue at the club next season. The announcement stated that the 31-year-old informed the club last week that he wouldn’t study their renewal offer which means his contract will expire on 30 June.
Susaeta’s reasoning for not signing a renewal is unknown at this point and it may never fully come to light. Most likely the winger understood that his time at Athletic was coming to an end and the club’s renewal offer would reflect that truth. It was very likely that a renewal would require a significant decrease in wages next year as well as playing time.
Despite his dip in form over the past few years, Markel Susaeta will always be seen and remembered as an Athletic legend. He joined Lezama at just 9 years old, spending the last 22 years at the club and making 506 appearances. Susaeta always put the club first and is one of the best to ever wear the Zurigorri shirt.
