Athletic Announce That Ander Iturraspe And Mikel Rico Will Leave The Club This Summer
Changes are coming to Athletic. With new Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta in control and Gaizka Garitano continuing as manager next season the pair have already started working on the plans for the upcoming year. They will look for ways to strengthen the squad but that also means that some players will have to leave the club.
On Tuesday Athletic officially announced that Ander Iturraspe and Mikel Rico will leave the club this summer. Both players will see their contracts expire on 30 June and Athletic have already informed them that they will not be offered renewals. Athletic thanked both players for everything they have done for the club during their careers.
Ander Iturraspe leaves Athletic after 11 seasons with the first team where he has made 320 appearances for the Lions. He joined Lezama back in 1999 at the age of 10 and is an example for every young player that with hard work and dedication they can achieve their dream of playing at San Mamés. Iturraspe also spent the last few years serving as one of the team’s captains and has always put the club first above all else.
Mikel Rico has been an Athletic player for six years since signing with the Lions back in 2013. He’s made 176 appearances for the Zurigorri and has scored some big goals during his career at San Mamés. In the locker room, Rico has been a veteran leader and mentor to many teammates and is a highly respected professional. Like Iturraspe, he’s given everything to Athletic and represented the club well.
