Athletic Club Reportedly Won’t Offer Markel Susaeta A Contract Renewal
Athletic will look a lot different next year. It’s already been confirmed that Ander Iturraspe and Mikel Rico will be leaving the club with their contracts expiring, but they likely won’t be the only ones. For the past few months there have been countless questions about the future of Markel Susaeta and it now appears as though a decision has been made.
According to a report from Alberto Santacruz of Oye Athletic, the club has made the decision to not offer Susaeta a renewal. The 31-year-old has yet to meet with the club to negotiate a new contract and as things stand right now that won’t be happening at all. There’s still time for the situation to change, but if Susaeta doesn’t have chances to prove himself on the field that’s highly unlikely.
Gaizka Garitano is looking to rejuvenate the squad this summer regardless of whether or not Athletic qualify for Europe. The Mister is expected to give Iñigo Vicente and Gaizka Larrazabal the chance to fight for a place in the first team and Susaeta is said to not be a part of the plans moving forward. If the report is accurate, the Athletic legend only has five games left at the club.
Over the past few weeks several sources have been saying that it was likely Susaeta would leave Athletic. Still, there are some who believe that his future will depend on whether or not the Lions qualify for Europe. If Susaeta does indeed leave San Mamés the Zurigorri will be saying goodbye to one of the best to ever wear the Athletic shirt. Markel Susaeta has made 505 appearances for the Lions and has given everything to his boyhood club. Only time will tell what’s going to happen, but fans could be seeing the end of an Athletic legend.
