Iñigo Lekue “In The Second Half We Saw Who Real Madrid Are”
Iñigo Lekue spent the beginning of the season sidelined with a fractured ankle only to come back to training and require lower back surgery. He’s worked hard to get back into the team and had only played 31 minutes all year before Sunday’s match against Real Madrid. The 25-year-old finally returned to the starting lineup and put in an impressive performance.
“After so much time away with injuries I am accustomed to the lack of minutes”, he explained to Athletic TV after the match, “but the important thing is that I returned to the starting lineup, although it was a bad result. It isn’t easy to have long-term injuries and go through the operating room twice. Everything has come by working day by day and everything is forgotten. I knew I could play and we prepared for this.”
Athletic could have taken a stronger hold of 7th place with a win on Sunday, but it wasn’t meant to be. Real Madrid came away with a 3-0 victory extending their unbeaten streak to 15 games against the Basques at the Santiago Bernabéu. “In the second half we saw who Madrid are”, said Lekue. “They scored a goal against us and they were unforgiving. We missed that goal to get ahead on the scoreboard first.”
Now Athletic will turn their attention to Wednesday’s match against Leganés. With just 5 games left to play the Zurigorri need a positive result to keep pace in the race for Europe. Lekue sees it as a great chance to take another big step forward. “We have a good opportunity to add three points to fight for Europe.” A win at Butarque is a necessity now.
