Yeray Preparing To Start At Right-Back With Ander Capa And Oscar De Marcos Injured
Gaizka Garitano’s injury problems have turned into a full-blown issue. Not only will Athletic be without Ibai Gómez, Dani García, and Ander Capa on Sunday when they travel to Real Madrid, it also looks like Oscar De Marcos will be unavailable as well. The right-back has not trained at all this week and is expected to miss the trip to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Being without De Marcos and Capa leaves Garitano in a difficult situation. The only other right-back in the squad is Iñigo Lekue who has only played once the entire season after dealing with a fractured ankle and lower back surgery. Lekue may be the natural choice to start, but the Mister apparently has other plans for how to field his team.
Friday’s training session at Lezama was open to the public and Garitano used both Lekue and Yeray in the right-back position. Yeray actually played some as a right-back when he was younger, but hasn’t done so with the first team. Meanwhile, Unai Nuñez and Iñigo Martinez paired up as the center-backs. Yuri Berchiche and Mikel Balenziaga worked at left-back with Berchiche cleared to play after suffering a shoulder injury last weekend in the win over Rayo Vallecano.
Getting a positive result against Real Madrid is never easy. The Whites may not have anything left to play for this season, but they are still very dangerous and Athletic will be without several important players. Still, this team has shown under Garitano that it doesn’t matter who is on the field. The Zurigorri will fight to the death for every single point.
