Iker Muniain Looking For His First Win At The Santiago Bernabéu
Iker Muniain may only be 26 but he’s been playing football for the Athletic first team for nearly 10 years. In that time he’s never won a match at the Santiago Bernabéu but hopes to change that this weekend. The Basques will travel to take on Real Madrid on Sunday with hopes of keeping pace in the race for Europe.
“I have tied, but I haven’t had the chance to win at the Bernabéu”, the midfielder told El Desmarque Bizkaia. “We will see about it this Sunday. The closer we are to the level we’ve been having the more options we have to win at the Bernabéu. We have done very well since Garitano too over the team. It’s a very great feat.”
Muniain has played very well under the new manager, but he isn’t the only one. Iñaki Williams has also found his rhythm in the team and has scored 14 goals this season, a career high. “I’m very happy for Iñaki, he has silenced the criticism”, Muniain said in defense of his close friend.
As things stand right now Athletic currently sit 7th in the La Liga table which should be enough to qualify for Europe. There are only six games left on the schedule this season and they will all be complicated. “It’s not easy that we play four of our last six games away from home”, Muniain said. If the Zurigorri are going to achieve their goal they will have to get positive results outside of San Mamés.
