Iñaki Williams “Fighting For Europe Is Motivation For Us”
With regular minutes in the striker position Iñaki Williams has really started to find his rhythm. The 24-year-old scored two goals in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Rayo Vallecano and credited his behavior on the field for why the referee credited the strikes despite the fact that they hit a defender before beating the keeper.
“I’m very happy to be able to contribute with the goals in this victory against Rayo, which was the deserved result. I talked to the referee about the first goal which came off of Amat and he said it was mine so I’m happy. I’m very loyal and always behave well on the field, so that also helps.”
Williams went on to tell Athletic TV that it’s his responsibility to score goals. He was unhappy to see Raúl de Tomás pull a goal back late and believes that Athletic could have won by a lot more if they had finished their chances.
“As a striker you have to score goals. That’s what you are supposed to do. It was a pity that Rayo scored a late goal, but we didn’t have to remember those times that we failed to hold the lead. The match could have ended 5-1 or better. Fighting for Europe is a motivation for us. We have to enjoy it and fight for our goals. We are confident that we can do it.”
Sunday’s win saw Athletic move into 7th place in the La Liga table, but they will face a big challenge next weekend when they travel to the Santiago Bernabéu. The Lions will need to get a good result against Real Madrid to continue their pursuit of European qualification and players like Iñaki Williams will play a big role in the success to come.
