Beñat “It Was A Key Game And I Believe That The Victory Was Just”
Beñat returned to the starting lineup on Sunday with Mikel San José suspended for the match. The 32-year-old assisted the opening goal and nearly scored himself with a shot that rattled the crossbar in the second half. After the game, he spoke with Athletic TV and said that he believes Athletic dominated Rayo in every fact.
“It was a key game and I believe that the victory was just. The game had everything. We started well, we had our chances, and we clearly dominated the whole match. Rayo had two clear chances and put them both in. In the first half we played our game and we had chances to score even more goals. Rayo have great players, with a lot of individual talent, but we played our game. The pity is that we couldn’t score more goals.”
Beñat has been in fine form this season with Gaizka Garitano leading the team. “I found myself very comfortable”, he stated. “We were clear about what we needed to do. I enjoyed being on the field and I helped my teammates as much as possible. It’s a pity that my shot didn’t go in after hitting the crossbar.” Beñat also praised the usage of VAR which played a big role in the result. “VAR exists to do justice. With time the process will speed up.”
